Notes for Ezekiel Field:
In August of 1871, Ezekiel was accused of raping his ten year old adopted daughter, Melissa Mitchell. He pled guilty in court and was sentenced to twenty one years of labor in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
In 1874 proceedings began which lead to his release from prison. This was the result of letters written to the governor by Ezekiel pleading innocence, his wife Elizabeth and 55 members of the community. It was admitted that the trial had been very hasty and the doctor who examined Melissa was never called as a witness. Members of the community had been quick to condemn Ezekiel. Ezekiel also claimed that his sons placed the girl in his house and frame him for a rape that did not happen. The sons convinced his wife of his guilt. Elizabeth filed for divorce in February of 1876.
Ezekiel was pardoned by the governor on 27 May 1876. By this time he was broken in health. His land had been sold by his sons and he filed suit to recover it. The outcome this suit as not been found. He presumably died by 1880, as he is not found in the 1880 Gibson County, Indiana, census.
