SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Rae Ellen Wenger, 77, of San Jose, formerly of Elkhart, passed away Feb. 20, 2009.
Rae was born Nov. 14, 1931, to Harvey and Marie (Eddy) Fields in Elkhart County, Ind. She married Darwin Wenger on Aug. 13, 1950, in Nappanee. He preceded her in death in 1987. Rae and Darwin owned and operated Wenger Mechanical in Elkhart. She also began and operated The Bookworm in Elkhart and the 5th St. Deli in Michigan City. She is survived by five children, Karol (Randy) Phillips, Janelle Wenger, Lynn Borsa, David (Rose) Wenger and Eric Wenger; six grandchildren, Julia, Carmen, Cory, Sawyer, Tanner and Lauren; four great-grandchildren, Jessica, Brady, Aidan and Maverick; and Mary Clouse of Nappanee, her sister and best friend. Two other children, Lisa and Kent, preceded her in death. Friends may call from noon until 1 p.m. Saturday at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, 403 W. Franklin St., Elkhart. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial is in Violett Cemetery.
