Sacramento City Cemetery, 1000 Broadway, Sacramento, California. This is a very attractive cemetery. Until about twenty firve years ago it had been allowed to rundown. Then various civic groups began to renovate the cemetery with new plantings and excellent care. Today it is an amazingly beautiful cemetery. In mid April it is a blaze of color with a huge variety of plants and shrubs in bloom.

George W. Julian/Feb. 22, 1801/sept 13, 1878
George W. Julian was the husband of Sarah Stafford (1800-1843) a sister to Leodicia Stafford and a son of John and Elizabeth Wainscott Stafford of Indiana. Leodicia married Richard Irwin and was the great grandmother of Miriam Grasz Field to whom this website is dedicated. George immigrated from Illinois to Sacramento about 1850. He had been a farmer in Illinois and continued farming in Sacramento and Somona counties in California. Their daughter, Rebecca, married George W. McCulloch and they also came to California and lived in Dutch Flat. Rebecca and George McCulloch are buried in the Dutch Flat Cemetery. Some of Rebecca and George's family moved to the Rocklin area and are buried in the Rocklin Cemetery in Placer County.

unknown Julian
| Lila G. Kidder/Died/Sept. 26, 1875/ We shall meet in the morning.
|
We do not know who these graves commorate. George W. Julian and Sarah Stafford had a son, Thomas Benton Julian, who married a Florence L. Chamberlain. Florence's mother was Carlotte A. Kidder so Lila Kidder is most likely a relative from that side of the family. There are Chamberlain family members buried just a few yards to the south of these two tombstones. The obelisk is quite worn but might have Chamberlain carved on it. Both stones look like they were broken but repaired. There are several other family members buried in the same plot and there is a large brass marker (below) with their names on it.

Carolyne Emily White Julian/Aug. 9, 1880 - Feb. 24, 1870
For some we loved, the lovliest and the best that from his vintage rolling time hath persists have drunk their cup a round or two before, and one by one crept silently to rest.
Valentine White Julian/Feb. 14, 1908 - Feb.17, 1964/Edwin Benton Julian 1872 - 1950

Thomas Beton (1836-1904) and Florence L. Chamberlain (1837-abt. 1924) Julian had a son, Edwin Benton Julian (1872-1950). He married Carolyn Emily White in about 1907. They had three children, Valentine W. (1908-1964), Meredith (abt. 1910 and Frederick B. (1911-1976).
We realize this marker is very difficult to read. We plan to return and get a better photograph soon.

Elizabeth E. Chamberlain/1824-1909
| Philip F. Chamberlain/May 22, 1824-Oct. 11,1879/ Native of New York
|
We are uncertain as to who these people were. Philip could have been a brother of Florence who was the wife of Thomas Benton Julian. The tombstones are not far apart.
